I know a fair amount about a fair amount of things. Music and the music industry, just for the record, is not one of them.
I keep things pretty simple: I know what I like, I listen to it.
Which includes Daft Punk, going all the way back to “Around the World.”
Every time Daft Punk has a new project in the works, I become quasi-obsessed with the leaks that trickle out.
This time around was no exception, especially thanks to YouTube.
Listen On Repeat keeps no records of how many times I looped “Get Lucky” samples and clips during those early weeks, and for this I am thankful.
I also pre-ordered the album on iTunes! $11.99! Totally worth it.
But man was I jazzed when “Get Lucky” was finally released on iTunes as a single! I bought it immediately, jammed it in my earholes, especially during runs. Loved “Get Lucky.”
To the point where I actually put off listening to Random Access Memories in full this week when iTunes previewed a stream of it, because it was just too good to be true.
I did finally listen to it on Tuesday! It is smooth stuff! Good listening! I am listening to it now! I like it!
But listening to the stream, it became clear to me that while the whole thing was very good, there was only one song I really felt the need to OWN, y’know?
That song? “Get Lucky.” And yeah, the version iTunes released as a single is the “radio edit,” not the full-full version, but still.
Also, a year ago I signed up for Spotify Premium. $8.99 a month for nearly all the musics versus $11.99 for one album? Not sure what kind of math that is, but it’s math.
So today, I canceled my iTunes pre-order of Random Access Memories.
If the album is available on Spotify, I’ll be able to listen to it there when it’s released, see if other songs emerge from it that I do feel the need to own.
If the album is not available on Spotify and I do feel like buying it — well, it’ll still be $11.99 on iTunes a month from now.
The music industry, man.
Like I said, I’m no expert, but I hear it’s having some issues.
